City Centric State Government Tears Heart From Queensland History

Katter’s Australian Party Candidate for Cook Lachlan Bensted said he is mortified that a Queensland Government report calls for the Queens Birthday Public Holiday to be moved from June to October.

The report called ‘Getting The Balance Right – A proposal on holidays in Queensland’ has been released for discussion by the Education Department and recommends to the public that the Labour Day holiday stay and the Queens Birthday holiday be moved to October.

Mr. Bensted says, “A very significant cultural and historical event happens every year in Cooktown that celebrates the coming ashore of Captain Cook in his quest to fix the HM Bark Endeavour. It is the single biggest annual financial event in the town and draws people from all over the world.”

“The Cooktown Discovery Festival has largely been successful because of the Queens Birthday Holiday in June. The actual date that Cook went ashore was the 17^thof June, so it is very appropriate that the Queens Birthday Holiday on the 14^th of June remain where it is.”

“If the State Labor Government wants to move any public holiday they should move Labour Day to October like most of the other States.”

The Queens Birthday holiday and Labour Day are both celebrated at different times during the year by the different States. The ACT, NSW and South Australia all celebrate Labour Day on the first Monday in October. The State Government are calling on submissions from the public about Holidays.
